Research - The Internet Mapping Project spacer

About Internet Mapping Project

The project consists of frequent path probes, one to each registered Internet entity. From this, trees are built mapping the paths to most of the networks on the Internet. The specific endpoints or network services on those endpoints are not the goal of this map but rather the subject being mapped here is the topology of the "center" of the Internet.

These paths change over time, as routes reconfigure and as the Internet grows. As Lumeta saves the topological data over a time, these scans show how the Internet is growing and can be used to study a variety of problems and changes on the Internet.

The same technology used to map the Internet is employed by Lumeta to enable the world's most security conscious organizations to:

The IPv6 Mapping Project

IPv6 is a critical technology that will help ensure that the Internet can support a growing user base and an increasingly large number of IP-enabled devices. The current Internet protocol, IPv4, has served as the underlying protocol for the Internet for almost 30 years. Due to the exponential growth in demand for IP addresses, IPv4's robustness and scalability is under scrutiny. IPv6 was engineered to address these issues and meet today's increasing demand for IP-based services and network devices.

In August of 2004, Lumeta Corporation began researching IPv6, and mapping the IPv6 Internet. Lumeta's first color map of the IPv6 Internet was completed on January 13, 2005.
